How to support a child's development according to the philosophy of Maria Montessori?

Montessori August with MeowBaby

Although there is no official, global “Montessori Month,” many companies and parents symbolically dedicate August to reflecting on how to prepare a child's space for the new season. It is a time of change, reorganization, and… inspiration. That is why Montessori August with MeowBaby is our way of reminding that a child's development can be supported wisely – in harmony with nature and the philosophy of Maria Montessori.

Where did the Montessori philosophy come from?

The Montessori approach originated in the early 20th century in Italy. Its author was Maria Montessori – a physician, anthropologist, and educator who was the first in history to trust children more than school systems. Based on many years of observations of children of different ages, she developed a method based on a simple assumption:

Children learn best when they can act independently, at their own pace, in a properly prepared environment.

Montessori rejected compulsion, sensory overload, and plastic in favor of mindfulness, movement, and learning through the senses.

Where and when did Montessori gain popularity?

The method quickly spread beyond Italy – first in Europe, then in the USA. Already in the 1930s, Montessori schools operated in several countries. Today, there are thousands of institutions and even more homes where parents consciously introduce Montessori principles daily.

The rise in popularity in recent years is a result of fatigue from excess – noisy toys, screens, and synthetic materials. Montessori is a return to what is natural, calm, and developmental.

What is the Montessori method about?

The main pillars are:

  • child's independence – the adult supports rather than does things for the child

  • prepared environment – simple, orderly, aesthetic

  • natural materials – wood, cotton, wool instead of plastic

  • learning through senses and movement – the child explores the world with their body

  • no compulsion – the child chooses activities appropriate to their developmental stage

The Montessori method works from the first months of life – whether you are a teacher or simply a mindful parent.

Montessori begins at home

You don't need to remodel the entire room right away. Just a few conscious choices: a wooden ladder instead of a plastic structure, a sensory path instead of musical toys, simplicity instead of chaos.
